Lure Compatibility?

$
0
0
Hello all. Newbie here, trying to round out a 5-line spread targeting blues and blacks mostly under 300# in Okinawa (although a 770# was taken 2 weeks ago). I have a question regarding lure compatibility in the spread. I've picked up just a few lures to start out based on recommendations from friends, but just recently heard that some lures aren't necessarily compatible with others. I have no idea which are and which aren't so am looking for your advice. Outfits pulling them are 80#. Here's what I'm thinking:

SC: Looking for recommendations. Thinking about Marlin Magic Ruckus, Bart Hawaiian Bkfst, Bart 1656 Slant? Other?
LC: Zuker 5.5 (Blk/Pur)
SR: Bart El Squid Sr. (Blu-Sil-Pnk) (productive in Okinawa)
LR: Marlin Magic Baby Ruckus (Grn-Yel), (or get a Pakula Med Sprocket Jet)
SG: Polu Kai Stubby Sam Bullet (Rootbeer), (or get a Bart Super ProJet)

Questions:
1) Lure-maker wise, is this too much mix-n-match? Anything stick out as non-compatible?
2) Would you change anything? I.e. Run the Baby Ruckus SR, Med Sprocket LR, El Squid Sr SG?
3) Is there a disadvantage in mixing color combinations throughout the spread?

Really appreciate your help; thanks!

High Tech Rigging Wire

$

Hey all,

I came across some high tech rigging wire at one of my favorite tackle stores and picked some up, but want to see if anyone here has used similar stuff, and what you thought of it. It's nylon coated stainless wire that's 37-strand, rated at 240kg (529 lbs), but the incredible thing about it is the diameter is only about 1.3mm with the nylon coating. Pretty easy to handle and crimps up nice, is stiffer than straight 300# mono, but more flexible than double 300#. Really hard to cut through, even with my best dikes, so should stand up to wahoo bites. I'm thinking the small diameter and the slick nylon coating could make it that much easier to slide through a marlin's mouth and set the hook? If you've had experience with something similar, would love to hear your impressions. Will attach a pic.

Cheers!

Lighter Gauge Hooks= Higher Hookup %?

$

It seems that lately there has been more attention given to lighter gauge hooks to get better hook penetration, and hopefully a higher hookup percentage. My first reaction on hearing that was that lighter gauge hooks equals straightened hooks and lost fish, but now I'm seeing it's more than just hook gauge change. It seems more like a technique mindset change that includes:

1) Lighter gauge hooks (for better penetration)
2) Lighter drag settings (so you don't straighten the hooks, and also to try to keep the marlin on the surface)
3) More aggressive boat handling, chasing fish in forward (so you don't get spooled with the lighter drag settings)

The success reports of guys moving in this direction (Bonze, among others) is pretty exciting!
Anyone here also moving to lighter gauge hooks (Bonze, Pakula Dojo Light, Gamakatsu O'Shaughnessy, Gamakatsu Jigging Assist, etc.) and that whole technique change?

Cheers!

My Winter Project

Here are most of the lures that I have made this past winter after getting interested in making my own. There are many different shapes/sizes/colors. I heard if you ever start this kind of a project, it can be a little addicting and they were right. It's a lot of time involved to collect all the materials, make originals, make molds, pour lead inserts, insert eyes, pour heads, shape, finish, etc. etc. but very addicting. Coming from the middle of the Canadian prairies, theres no one else I know that does this sort of thing here, but wanted to get a bunch of lures. Now I want to get out to see how they run. Most have a good chunk of lead inserted, with the bigger bullet heads made mostly from lead with a little resin covering the insert. (should be good for some pretty fast trolling)
I don't get many chances to get out fishing where I can use these types of lures, but hope more and more opportunities will come my way in the next few years. I'm not that experienced at Marlin fishing, (I'm very experienced at Salmon fishing), but this site has given me the chance to get many ideas & opinions from experts. I will choose choose the ones that I think will work best. Thanks Guys & Gals !!
Have a look at the heads I have skirted up and give me some feedback on some of the ones you would try. I know it depends on where you are fishing, time of year, etc. I can't get out until January 2016 in Ixtapa Mexico, then end of Feb in Cabo. (I hope you can view all the attachments)

Peter Wright quote

In his column "The Wright Way" that concludes the May 2012 issue of Marlin Magazine, Peter Wright states, "...An Ilander is a good lure, A horse-ballyhoo is a good bait. The combination fo the two is the worst of both worlds for billfish and dolphin fish, but not too bad for tuna and wahoo."

Can anyone explain this one to me, or expound on it? In my south Florida centric forum life, the Ilander skirted select or horse 'hoo is a favorite of many posters. Here dolphin are our most adundant and targeted pelagic, followed by wahoo and smaller tuna. Other than sailfish, which are well known in south Florida, billfish are fairly rare in most areas. But horse 'hoos aren't normally sailfish baits to these posters.

So is the popularity of the combination of a select or horse ballyhoo with the Ilander in these waters a reflection of the multiple target species?

A boat captain is dead after being speared by a swordfish in Hawaii.

Swordfish kills fisherman in Hawaii - CNN.com

"Randy Llanes, 47, was killed Friday while trying to catch the swordfish with a spear gun, according to the Hawaii Police Department.

Llanes, who runs a deep sea fishing charter, jumped in the water at Honokohau Harbor on the Big Island after spotting the broadbill swordfish.

After being hit with the spear that Llanes fired off, the fish "thrashed about, leaving a puncture wound to his upper chest," said Lt. William Souther."

Joe Yee Lure Identification & Cleaning/Reskirting Questions?

$
0
0
I purchased 3 used Joe Yee lures recently and I am in the process of trying to determine what model/name they are, age, and anything else important about them.

In order of pictures:

1.) Blueish to clear 2" long by 1 3/16" diameter head, "EVIL" on top and "JOE YEE HON HI" on bottom of head, 12" skirt in average condition.

2.) Clear with sparkly 2 1/4" long by 1 1/8" diameter head, "JOE YEE HON HI" on bottom of head. 12" Pink, blue, yellow, skirt in below average condition.

3.) Black to clear with a material that gives it a prism effect???, 2" long by 15/16" diameter head "JOE YEE HON HI" on bottom of head. 12" skirt in red and black, very poor condition.

I am not sure at this point if I am going to fish these or keep them safe as a collectors item. Do collectors want these in "used" condition vs. cleaned and reskirted?

Is cleaning these with hot water and then a high end silicone spray (CRC Industrial Silicone, part number 03032, or unscented Pledge) the way to go to try to revitalize the skirts?

If the skirts don't come back to life should I reskirt them with high quality skirts? Any recommendations on the best skirts for these?

Thanks in advance for any insight - Tight lines!

Transducer choice for Marlin fishing

$

Hello,

Currently owning a Calcutta 263 boat and fishing in West Africa, i face a dilemma on choosing the right transducer for my sounder, there are transducers that works best for mid upper waters (surface to 300' deep), and others for 300' to deeper.

I know many marlins are fished in shallow water, but i don't want to make a mistake here...
In your opinion what should i choose ?
I have the following options :

1)GSD 26 + Airmar PM265C-LM for depth and a GCV10 + GT51 for down vu and side vu on shallow waters but this combo is expensive.
2) GSD 26 + Airmar PM275C-LHW for shallow to mid 300-600' waters
3) GSD 26 + Airmar PM265C-LM for deep waters

Thanks !

"Kona, HI – Guy Kitaoka and Darrell Omori on the Dayna (21′ Skiff) have weighed an absolute monster of a Blue Marlin in at 1,368 lbs. The fish had a 150” Short Measurement and an 83” Girth Measurement and a 22.5” Tail Measurement. Capt. Bomboy Llanes assisted in getting the fish to the scale. This is the 8th Largest Blue Marlin caught in Hawaii and the first over 1,300 lbs. since 1992 (1,356 on Spellbound). This is the 4th Grander on the Big Island in 2015."

Circle hook size

I fish in the northern gulf of mexico where we can encounter blues from 200 to 1,000 lbs. I usually use magnum hard tails (blue runners) for live baiting. Is there a general rule to follow with size of circle hooks? Is it only relative to bait size or does the possible fish size matter also? I read that the 1300 pounder out of kona was caught on a 10-0 mustad. That confused me bc i had been thinking you would need around a 18-0 for a fish that large? I fish 50 wides on stand up.

Fishing from Little boats/outboards

Hola pescadores,

I was just navigating through some very old posts, i found a thread called "Fish attracting hulls???" from 2001 where some very famous fishermen made comments like "Little boats/outboards = less fish unless you use more teasers." Another comment from a very respected lure maker said: " all the outboard powered skiffs that generate all that white water/high pitched noise don't get the same amount of strikes as a straight shaft boat"

I fish from a 22 ft center console with a single 225hp outboard that does in fact generate some white water, wich i try to minimize as much as possible with the trim angle and stabilizers. I fish with briddled skipjacks, rigged swimming dead baits and lures and have some good and bad days. On the days im only pulling lures, should i consider dropping them farther back a bit into cleaner water? I troll from 7.5 to 9 knts.

If the comments i just read had come from "normal" fishermen like myself, maybe i would not have paid as much attention to this thread. But you do pay attention, if those comments are comming from Bart, Ron Akana, and Peter Pakula to mention a few...

What do you guys think about this?? Gracias for any information!

Hi Guys,
I'm a new member here from the West Coast of Australia and would appreciate some help to ID a couple of lures I bought locally.
The first is a C&H Custom Lures and the second is a Bob Schneider. I'm guessing they probably date from the 80's?
Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark
