Marlin....Marshall Islands

New not Marlin fishing. I have caught one Marlin, but it was not my setup on the rig. I hooked a Marlin, it cut the leader right under the lure. So I have some questions....what pound leader should I be using? I use 300 right now, but I have lost at least two with this. I am trolling 8 to 12 inch skirts. Penn 80 vsw with 130 pound line. Leader line, for Marlin, steel or mono? It seems in kona, people hook up Marlin all the time, here not so much....any words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance

Just wanting to revisit the topic of Making marlin / tuna lures.

I have started to make my own, but i would like to fine tune the process with molds and best resin.

How people make there inserts? I'm using paua shell.

I'm sure these are secrets but some tips would help.

Couple of pics of the lures I've made
gone with the name SC lures for a bit of fun.

Softhead vs. Hard

Hi folk,

This is my first post on this forum. I have heard quite a few people swear by softheaded lures such as Moldcraft, but I see majority of marlin trolling lures produced have hard heads. What are the pros and cons of both? Which one would you prefer, if you had to choose only one lure. The only success I have had so far has been with a Moldcraft Standard Wide Range (blue and white) coupled with a Moldcraft Standard Bird; but then I do not have enough experience in this type of fishing.

Thanks!

I have been searching for this style of skirt material as an alternative to Newells. I found a couple small international lure makers having them made but don't resell. Anyone have a recommended source? Thanks.

Best Mono for Marlin

Hi I am looking to upgrade my 30 two-speeds with new line to replace the 80lb crappy Chinese 8-strand braid I had filled them up with.

This is what I intend to do:
I am thinking of ordering some 65# JB Line One solid braid and use 600yds as backing on my two reels. I intend to topshot it with 200-300 yds 50# mono. I use these reels offshore.

What 50# mono would be the best choice, with an actual BS of 60+ ? (Keep in mind JB breaks at 90+)

I am currently considering these options but any new one would be welcome that would do the job. 1. Momoi Hi-Catch, 2. Trilene Big Game. I already have two 1/4# spools of Big Game (275yds each.) I also see Berkley ProSpec as a lower diameter option but don't know much about the line.

Is there any low dia mono that is suitable for billfish? I am also considering the option to use only mono if I can get 600+ yds of 50# on my 30's

Thanks.

PS. I know most of you big game fishermen out there would want to suggest hollow-core JB instead of solid, but that is currently beyond my budget.

Potential record NZ Blue

Lady angler - Donna Pascoe
420.4kg
37kg line

"While fishing in the Nationals this week, this morning we hooked up onto a sizeable blue marlin 20 miles north of North Cape.
Got it to the boat in 23 minutes and Brad Bennetto called it a very sizeable fish actually referring to it as a slob and it was decided to take it.
Got it onboard, measured 3.4m (11ft) long and we thought 350 to 400kg. Our new crew Phil Evans got the gaff shot.
This is the 2nd 400kg plus fish for Gladiators owner Donna Pascoe and is a pending NZ women's record which is currently 350kg.
As always Houhora were so welcoming to weigh with Warren and Debbie Bunn doing the honours.
None of this fish will go to waste as it is being smoked by Frank at Top Smoke Houhora and after we have taken what we need for family and friends, Phil will be distributing it in the local Moerewa community."

ProJet report

I had my first real go at trolling my BBL ProJet yesterday. I fished solo out of Jupiter Inlet (Florida) in my 23.5' CC. Due to no crew and short period waves, I elected to pull only 3 lines and not bring the outriggers.

Based on Capt. Miller's writings about Super ProJet being his near constant selection for 5th line (shotgun) I decided to put my projet in the water to get a real sense of how it would troll for me. I also selected two other high confidence lures (a pink mylar feather chasing a squid chain and a small Moldcraft chugger with a bird). I ran the project furthest back down the middle, with the others fished from the forward (angled out slightly) rod holders that are normally used for the rods being run in the outriggers.

My Projet is rigged with a 7/0 or 8/0 southern tuna hook, semi-stiff on heavy cable with about 9' of 200-300lb clear mono leader. I was fishing in heavy scattered sargassum weed, that hadn't quite yet managed to form up into nice lines.

My biggest disappointment with the lure was how poorly it shed weed -- it fouled more than the other two combined. Of course, part of why I like the other two is their ability to shed weed. I was, however, quite pleased with the slight side to side shimmy/wiggled the Projet showed on the dive portion of its trolling cycle.

The only fish I caught, a moderately size little tunny (locally bonita) came at the end of the day on the Projet. So this is now a "proven" and "bloodied" lure in my collection. So it will see trolling time again, but perhaps only when I need a larger shotgun lure, like when pulling a full spread of my larger lures. I pull quite a few smaller lures for the local blackfin tuna and dolphin.

So if you have the ball bearing swivel at the lure end, do you need another swivel on the leader or can you go strait from your wind on to the swivel on the lure for stealth?
